چکیده

Individuals in nature frequently face decision problems where the information available to them is uncertain and their reproductive success depends on the outcome of their decisions. In these cases natural selection should be expected to favour individuals whose behavioural strategies yield the best reproductive payoffs. It is accepted that decision-makers in nature should evolve to behave as if they were Bayesian learners when making decisions on uncertain information (Marshall et al., 2013a,b; McNamara et al., 2006; McNamara and Houston, 1980; Tenenbaum et al., 2006). In this thesis different decision problems from nature are modelled in order to determine the optimal strategies that should be expected to evolve in response to different parameters of the environment, under the assumption that decision-makers should also evolve to make decisions as if they were Bayesian. One model is proposed to determine the conditions under which inducible defences, a type of phenotypic plasticity, should be expected to evolve as a defensive mechanism against predators. The model is used to predict when plasticity is the evolutionarily optimal strategy, given the decision-maker’s inherited uncertainty regarding predation risk. The model assumes that this inherited uncertainty has been shaped by natural selection in prior generations of the decision-maker’s species to reflect the uncertainty exhibited by the predation risk in the environment. It is shown that when this inherited uncertainty is high enough (and thus when the uncertainty exhibited by the predation risk is also high enough) then plasticity is the optimal strategy. A second model is presented in order to test the hypothesis that decision-makers evolve their Bayesian priors in response to variation in the environment. The results confirm the assumption made in the model described above that the decision-maker’s inherited assessment and uncertainty of the predation risk can be shaped by natural selection. Finally, a third model is presented to determine when decision-makers should be expected to evolve self-deception biases in situations of conflict over resources, such as food, against other decision-makers. This model tests the theory proposed by Trivers (2011), which states that the most evolutionarily successful deceivers are those who self-deceive

Modelling and Decision-making on Deteriorating Production Systems using Stochastic Dynamic Programming Approach

This study aimed at presenting a method for formulating optimal production, repair and replacement policies. The system was based on the production rate of defective parts and machine repairs and then was set up to optimize maintenance activities and related costs. The machine is either repaired or replaced. The machine is changed completely in the replacement process, but the productio...

The Effects of the CEO’s Perceptual Bias in Economic Decision-Making and Judgment on the Capabilities of the Financial Reporting Quality

The current research sets out to identify and scrutinize the impact of the CEO’s perceptual biases in judgment and economic decision-making on the reporting quality of the firms listed on the Tehran Stock Exchange. Adopting a mixed method, the present study first seeks to detect the components and indices of CEO’s perceptual biases via critical appraisal and with the special participation of 10...

Optimal Modelling for Decision Making of Electricity Retailer in Power Market Contracts by Considering Demand Side Management Programs

The growth and expansion of economic concepts in the power system is increasing in last years. Energy economists have considered the optimal decision-making of electricity market retailers in recent years. In this paper, a demand response program based model is pro-posed in order to make the optimal decision of the retailer in the electricity market, taking into account the different conditions...

Effect of Cognitive Biases on Rationality of Economic Decision Making under Risk among Students of Shahid Beheshti University

The purpose of this study is to determine the quality of individual economic decision making under risk and uncertainty. The research method is a quasi-experiment with single group and a post-test. The total population of the students of Shahid Beheshti University in 97 was 8.700 and due to non-normal distribution, we should use non-parametric Wilcoxon test, with sample of 180. The tool used to...

Neural substrates of cognitive biases during probabilistic inference.

Decision making often requires simultaneously learning about and combining evidence from various sources of information. However, when making inferences from these sources, humans show systematic biases that are often attributed to heuristics or limitations in cognitive processes. Here we use a combination of experimental and modelling approaches to reveal neural substrates of probabilistic inf...
